Which records can newly tie a family to its home?
The main ones are SEC ownership filings, probate notices, recorded deeds and the property tax roll. Each is filed on its own schedule, so each needs its own plan.
| Event | Record | What it can show | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| IPO | Form S-1 registration statement, Item 11(m) | The Item 403 table. Name and address of each holder of more than 5 percent of a voting class. | [1] [2] |
| Buying more than 5 percent of a listed class | Schedule 13D, due within five business days | Name and residence or business address of each natural person filing. | [3] [4] |
| Director, officer or 10 percent owner | Form 4, due by the end of the second business day after a trade | Name and street address of the reporting person. The form says the information is public record. | [5] |
| Any SEC filing | EDGAR full-text search | The full text of electronic filings since 2001, searchable by an individual's name. | [6] |
| Inheritance in Florida | Notice to creditors | Decedent's name, estate file number, and the personal representative's name and address. Published in a county newspaper. | [7] |
| Inheritance in Florida | Estate inventory and accountings | Confidential. Open to the personal representative, their attorney, interested persons or by court order. | [8] |
| Buying or receiving a Florida home | Recorded deed | Name and post-office address of each grantee. | [9] |
| Owning a Florida home | Property tax roll | Owner's name and address, and the property's physical address. | [10] |
Which address do the SEC filings show?
The Item 403 ownership table may show a business, mailing or residence address. Schedule 13D asks a natural person for a residence or business address. [2] [4]
Form 4 asks for the reporting person's street, city, state and ZIP code. The SEC states that what the form discloses is public record. [5]
A filed document stays searchable. EDGAR's full-text search reaches back to 2001 and accepts an individual's name. [6]
Securities counsel prepares these filings. Ask them early which address each filing will carry, and tell them which address the household uses for mail.
What does Florida probate make public?
The notice to creditors is published once a week for two consecutive weeks in a county newspaper. It names the personal representative and gives an address. [7]
The same notice carries the decedent's name, the estate's file number, the court's address and the attorney's name and address. [7]
The estate inventory is different. Florida makes inventories and accountings confidential and exempt from its public records law. [8]
Ask the estate's attorney which address will appear in the published notice before it runs. Probate rules in other states differ, so read the court's own rules there.
Which property records follow a purchase?
In Florida, a recorded deed carries each grantee's name and post-office address. The appraiser's roll lists the owner's name and address beside the property address. [9] [10]
An application for a Florida property tax exemption, such as homestead, goes to the county property appraiser. It is due on or before March 1. [11]
Titling and entity choices belong to your attorney. This guide doesn't suggest a structure. The Florida closing checklist lists the questions to bring them.
What should the household do before the news is public?
Start the steps below before the filing or announcement date. None of them depends on a legal decision.
| Area | Step | Check or source |
|---|---|---|
| Set up a mailing address you can use. Review it before filing any change of address. | LP-1 LP-2 | |
| Accounts | Ask each bank, broker and service which address is for mail and which is required for identity. | LP-3 |
| Credit | Freeze every adult's file at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Freezes are free. | [12] LP-4 |
| People-search sites | Send opt-out requests, then recheck monthly. California residents can use the state's DROP request. | [13] LP-11 |
| Search results | Turn on Google's Results about you notifications for each adult. | [14] LP-10 |
| Staff and advisers | Brief assistants, staff and vendors. Keep the home address off bios, speaker forms, delivery notes and press materials. | Staff brief |
| Photos | Keep the house and its street out of posted photos. | LP-14 |
A freeze placed online or by phone must be in place within one business day. An online or phone lift must happen within one hour. Plan any lift before a loan or new account. [12]
California's data brokers started processing DROP requests in August 2026. [13]
What stays public after these steps?
These steps don't change a filed SEC document, a recorded deed or a published notice. They limit new copies and close the commercial routes that repeat the address.
The Exposure Review shows where your family's address appears now and why, before the filing date. It is $1,500 per household.
